Now I'm much more mobile I've been looking around for a way to synchronise all my email into one place so that I'm able to access from wherever I am. Previously I'd set up my own domain and had any email forwarded to whichever address I knew I was going to check, hotmail, gmail or Thunderbird on my home computer.
However this was starting to prove problematic, particularly now I need to be able to access it from my PDA as well. I am unable to access webmail providers such as hotmail and gmail from my workplace and if I had downloaded the mail to my home computer using Thunderbird it was difficult to access it again at work or on my PDA.
After a bit of research though I think I may have found the solution: moving away from the old style POP3 mailboxes to IMAP. Basically this means that my mail stays on one server and I can access it anytime from anyplace I want. This allows me to read new mail on my home computer and have it show up on my PDA as well - marked as already read and viceversa. If I delete a mail on my PDA it will be deleted from my home computer when I next access it etc.
I looked at a number of different providers, but ended up plucking for a free trial at aliencamel.com. They seem to offer a superb deal which with excellent spam and anti-virus protection with is really something not to be sniffed at! They also offer webmail should the need arise to access it that way.
One of the anti-virus features include scanning both inbound and outbound messages with two leading virus engines for maximum protection. The spam prevention features include whitlelists and blacklists, Bayesian learning filters and pending email advisories their own patented approach for managing emails from unknown senders and eliminating false positives.
I'll let you know how I get on...
