Need a map?
I needed some satallite images of the local area for school today so I was on the internet last night finding what I wanted. Today it's so easy to get images of the area you wanted - you certainly don't have to send off to a specalised compant to get them. I eventually got my images from Multimap although I could have just as easily got them from Google Maps . Both of these sites allow you to view maps and satallite images of the choose area at various scales.
Which one is better? I'm not sure really. Google Maps allow you to view a map on your whole screen and easily scroll around while Mutimap has satellite images at much greater detail. (Google has assured UK customers that they will be adding greater detail to their satellite images when they can.) You really need to try both to make your decision.
One thing that I'm often asked though is how can you take these maps of the screen and put them into your worksheets without all the text around the outside. It's not possible to right-click on the images and save them as they are made up of lots of individual parts. My solution is to just press the PrtScrn (Print Screen) button when you have the map you want on screen. Then go into Word and click paste. Finally use the crop tool to remove all the text around the outside leaving you with just your map. Simple!
While we are talking about maps can I just reiterate what Gareth has said on the Primary Resources website - try Google Earth - it's a pretty impressive program that will allow you to fly around the world using satellite imaging. The UK needs more work on the satellite images, they're a little blurred, but Google have promised to improve the UK satellite images when they get a chance.
