Pied Piper of Hamelin Planning
After the SATS my class are going to be leading the KS2 end-of-year performance with the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Rather than having the performance as a stand alone, I'm going to be teaching a topic based SMART approach to the Pied Piper and linking in all the other subjects.
As such I've planned my Numeracy and Literacy around the Pied Piper until the last week of Summer 2 and created a 'How are you SMART book' for all the other subjects. I'm pleased with finished products and thought that I'd share them with you on the site. I'm not saying they are perfect, and don't know how well it will work, but I'm looking forward to giving it a go!

Pied Piper activity booklet. I plan to allow the children to pick the activities they wish from this booklet and work either independently or with a partner. This booklet covers all the foundation stage subjects except RE and PSHCE. Each activity contains:
- The task
- What I expect the children to complete
- The SMARTS that they will use to complete the task
- How I will assess each piece of work they complete.
Finally on the back page is a grid for the children to colour in the smarts as they complete them. I'm going to ask my children to try and develop the SMARTS that they have identified themselves as being weaker at. As the booklet is a Publisher document I have uploaded two versions: The Publisher version if you wish to alter it, or the PDF version to just print out.
I hope that you find these useful, please leave your comments and questions and I'll get back to you if I can help further. May I also take the time to thank my wife for her time in helping to compile this booklet - she hates being mentioned on the site! :)

I've passed this on to our year 6 teacher, I'll let you know how she gets on :-)

This looks really interesting - so how are the topic sessions structured? Do you provide any input or do the children drive everything from their booklet?
Are the children familiar with this approach and do you have any that don't act in a suffieciently self-motivated way? Do you run "tutorial" type slots for those who may be struggling?
Sorry for all these questions, it looks like I've completely overwhelmed you, but I'm absolutely fascinated by this idea and am wondering if/how I could adapt something like this for Y2.

Hi Nicola,
I'll try to answer each of your questions:
How are the topic sessions structured?
I've put aside a number of sessions in the afternoon for the activity booklet. During the morning the children are having literacy and numeracy as usual, except that it is linked to the Pied Piper. I still have seperate sessions for PE, RE, PSHE.
Do you provide any input or do the children drive everything from their booklet?
I'm providing the play for the children and a lot of the stimulus is coming from that. For the activity book the children are able to choose their own activities and work on them. I obviously go through the booklet in some detail before they make any choices explaining the activity carefully and exactly what I expect and able to provide for the activities.
Are the children familiar with this approach and do you have any that don't act in a suffieciently self-motivated way?
Yes the children are faily familiar with this approach. We're used Blooms taxonomy where the children have been able to pick their own activities before. It was difficult at first and the children needed a lot of guidence helping to pick the activities but they now seem fairly confident. I have got those 'no motivation' children and I keep an extra eye on them. The children have a 'diary' which they keep track of what they have done each lesson. I use this to check that the children are moving on, but obviously watch carefully those children that need it. It is however like any other piece of work, I'll set time limits on activites and dates and expect the children to be able to show me something next week / day.
Do you run "tutorial" type slots for those who may be struggling?
I'm available during all of the sessions. The children put down in their diary (learning journal) if they are stuck.
I've seen Blooms Taxonomy working with Year 2 before. They did a topic on Golidilocks. I'll see if I can find the planning for you and email it to you. Any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

I am writing an article on children's literature written originally for particular children e.g. Alice in Wonderland, The Just So Stories. I can't open your Publisher item because I have a different version, but do any of your activities set pupils trying to find out who Willy (in verse XV) was ??
Thanks for any help you can give.

First of all thanks for the visiting the site, I've attached a PDF version of the file so you can view it. To be honest I'd not really paid much notice to the Willy part, but as part of the work that I'm doing to the LEA I'll add it as an activity. Do you know who he was?
Let me know if I can be of any more help.

We are a neon light puppet making and performing company based in the NW England.
Two high schools have rung us this weekt requesting The Pied Piper as their theme for the day for their year seven (KS3).
Has this book been included in the N.C again and is it on the list for primary schools?
We are in the process of designing some self assembly Pied Piper puppets and if you'd like to be sent a free one e-mail me.
Liked the enthusiasm you put into this project and the way you made it cross curricular.
Thanks.

Weser School is a British Forces School in Hameln Lower Saxony. We are fortunate to live in the Rattenfanger Stadt and the Pied Piper is a regular visitor to school. If anyone wants any help with a project on the Piper we would be only happy to help.
