Films matched up to the new literacy strategy?

LiteracyLara has emailed me today wondering if anyone might be able to help her:

"After going on an ICT course today Get IT Write, about using film, we decided that it would be great if someone had been able to look at films and match it up to the literacy curriculum, and maybe other curriculum areas. The two course leaders said that they hadn't ever seen such a list, so I was wondering if either anyone who reads your site has such a list, or whether you could start asking people for their ideas about this so a list could be compiled? Hope you can help as this seems to be the way things are going with literacy and the new framework."

It's a good question - I know of resources produced as advertising for new films, but not specifically linked to the new strategy. I'm happy to pass on any ideas to Lara, or post them as comments below.

We've used Robin Hood Prince of Thieves for myths and legends. We particularly focussed on the moment when robin and the guys enter the castle to rescue the hostages and just before they fly over the wall.
Also 'The Railway Children' for Yr 5 - Writing in the style of older literature.
and Toy Story - Changing view points

I too have been to been to similar ICT courses, which are rich in ideas but lacking in resources.
Here are a few resources that I have used:
Story Starters can be found on the Teachers TV site. at:
http://www.teachers.tv/video/23316
You can also view video shorts at:
http://sph3re.tv
I have also used Walt Disney's Cinderella which is excellent for characterisation and settings.
I Hope this helps

I too have used Cinderella for writing playscripts (Y5) and the adaptation of Goodnight Mister Tom for historical settings and characterisation...links to 'What life was like for children in WWII.' You could also use the recent adaptation (ITV?) of Ballet Shoes for writing in the style of older literature. Harry Potter - any of the films for story starts, settings, characterisation.

www.filmeducation.org this website has existed for a while and contains a list of film and the curriculum area they could be used for....
Films i have used on a regular basis are...
Mulan
Tarzan (extras DVD 2nd disc contains a explanation of the deep canvas animation process developed for this film, i have used this in 'explanations' in literacy where children had to explain this process at their own level.
Thundercats for fantasy stories
On a side issue take a look at our school website in the 'movies' section where we have several films we have produced with the children in Literacy and other lessons

Hi Ross - I saw this post a while back and agreed with the apparent need for a structured approach to film use in the new framework. As a half term project and something that will hopefully become a useful resource, I have started http://filmforliteracy.wikispaces.com . A wiki that references film to the new primary literacy framework.

Early days yet but if people (and even the commenters on this post) join and contribute their ideas it will be very useful.
